The Photographic Process

Once a camera is in my hand, I literally see the world differently.  It's as if I develop a new set of eyes, ones that are less judgmental about what should be and what is.  Eyes that are curious,  concerned only with what is at that moment and don't care about the outcome.  Not caring about the outcome is the draw that keeps me coming back.

Black and White

Black and white prints allow me to show the world differently.  By removing the color, the essence of line, style, shape, and intent become the focus.  Color in an image becomes the focus; without color the image, and its emotion, become the focus.  I primarily work in a traditional darkroom, using archival processes to ensure that my prints will provide many years of contemplation for the viewer.

Alternative Processes

Having said what I did about black and white photography, I have to admit to a fascination with color slides.  The saturation, the density of color, the translucency all are extremely satisfying.  Creating Polaroid emulsion transfers allows me to work with some of those characteristics.
